Every Atom is Colour” Source: The National Museum of Norway · Image: Harriet Backer, «Evening, Interior», 1896. Photo: Nasjonalmuseet / Børre Høstland Harriet Backer (1845-1932) was a leading artist in her lifetime, occupying a central position in the Scandinavian art world, irrespective of gender. Every Atom is Colour will place Backer’s life and work in a time when society and women’s rights were undergoing radical change throughout Europe. A prominent colourist with a feeling for light and atmosphere, she also established herself among artists abroad. The 15 years she spent in Munich and Paris were a turning point in her development. Arriving in Paris in 1878, she enrolled in Madame Trélat de Vigny’s atelier, where she met other women artists – including the Swedish painter Hildegard Thorell (1850-1930). Backer’s colleague and close friend from Münich, the Norwegian landscape painter Kitty Kielland (1843–1914), accompanied her to Paris where they shared an apartment in the city together for ten years. Backer saw the male-dominated art world as a challenge, though she tended toward actions rather than words. In 1888, she established a renowned school for painters in Oslo, which she ran until 1909. Many significant artists such as Nikolai Astrup, Harald Sohlberg, Charlotte Wankel, Halfdan Egedius and Astrid Welhaven attended Backers school. She also participated in the 1889 and 1900 Expositions Universelles, earning a silver medal in 1889 and through her positions on purchasing committees and exhibition juries, she played a substantial role in establishing equality and professionalism in the Norwegian art world which is still apparent today.

From March 25 to July 14, 2024, Musée d’Orsay presents “Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment”, an exhibition honoring the 150th anniversary of the first impressionist exhibition. Source: National Gallery of Art, Washington · Image: Édouard Manet, “The Railway”, 1873, oil on canvas. National Gallery of Art, Washington On April 15, 1874, an exhibition by the “Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, and Engravers, etc.” opened at the Parisian studio of the photographer Nadar on the Boulevard des Capucines. It was a defiant response to the official, government-sponsored annual exhibition known as the Paris Salon. The first exhibition of these Société anonyme artists included works by Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, and Paul Cézanne, later known as impressionists. This now-legendary event is often considered the birth of modernist painting and remains a key moment in the history of Western art. What exactly happened in Paris in the spring of 1874, and what meaning can we attach to the emergence of this artistic movement? Works shown at the first impressionist exhibition will be put into perspective alongside paintings and sculptures displayed at the official 1874 Salon. This unprecedented juxtaposition will help us understand the visual shock that visitors experienced when first encountering the works of the impressionists. The exhibition will also explore the circumstances that led more than 30 artists to defy the official system of the Salon, with its judges, prizes, and government approval, by showing their art independently. At the time, France was struggling to recover from its defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, the siege of Paris and the violence of civil war. Following these crises, artists were rethinking their art, discovering their voices, and exploring new directions. After its venue in Paris, “Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment” will be shown at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, from September 8, 2024 to January 20, 2025.

From October 3, 2023, to February 4, 2024 the Musée d’Orsay presents “Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. His Final Months,” an exhibition focusing on the final months of Vincent van Gogh’s life in the French town of Auvers-sur-Oise. Image: “Wheatfield under Thunderclouds”, Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890), Auvers-sur-Oise, July 1890 “Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. His Final Months” arrives in Paris after its run at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, where it was on show from May 12 to September 3, 2023. According to the Van Gogh Museum, “in the exhibition, we follow Van Gogh from his arrival in Auvers-sur-Oise, where he optimistically and ambitiously set to work, through to his last works. By this time, feelings of failure, loneliness, and melancholy had gained the upper hand, but Van Gogh nevertheless continued to make enormously powerful works. The exhibition also explores Van Gogh’s significance as an artist at the time, and how his reputation grew in the initial years after his death.” The Orsay states that “No exhibition has yet been devoted exclusively to this final, yet crucial, stage of [Van Gogh’s] career. In two months, the painter produced 74 paintings and 33 drawings, including iconic works such as ‘Doctor Paul Gachet’, ‘The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise’, and ‘Field of Wheat with Crows’. With some forty paintings and twenty drawings, the exhibition will highlight this period in a thematic way: early landscapes depicting the village, portraits, still lifes, landscapes of the surrounding countryside. It will also present a series, unique in Van Gogh’s work, of paintings in an elongated double square format.” Interestingly, when “Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. His Final Months” opened in Amsterdam last May, it did so just a few days before the Art Institute of Chicago presented the exhibition “Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: The Modern Landscape”. Now, the two exhibitions coincide once again, as the latter will be on view at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam from 13 October.
From October 3, 2023, to February 4, 2024 the Musée d’Orsay presents “Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. His Final Months,” an exhibition focusing on the final months of Vincent van Gogh’s life in the French town of Auvers-sur-Oise.

Image: “Wheatfield under Thunderclouds”, Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890), Auvers-sur-Oise, July 1890

“Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. The exhibition also explores Van Gogh’s significance as an artist at the time, and how his reputation grew in the initial years after his death.”

The Orsay states that “No exhibition has yet been devoted exclusively to this final, yet crucial, stage of [Van Gogh’s] career. It will also present a series, unique in Van Gogh’s work, of paintings in an elongated double square format.”

Interestingly, when “Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise.
