The first major monographic exhibition in the UK devoted to Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664), is on view at the National Gallery from 2 May to 23 August 2026. Source: National Gallery · Image: Francisco de Zurbarán, “Agnus Dei”, Museo del Prado. Along with Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682), Zurbarán was one of the leading painters of 17th-century Spain. His paintings, which include stunning life-size depictions of saints, soaring altarpieces and contemplative still lifes, are celebrated for their naturalism, directness and deep emotional power. This exhibition is the first dedicated presentation of the artist’s paintings at the National Gallery since 1994 when the series of ‘Jacob and his Twelve Sons’ from Auckland Castle was shown in the Sunley Room. Several works by Zurbarán also featured in The Sacred Made Real, an exhibition held in 2009–10. This exhibition of almost 50 paintings will span the chronological and iconographic breadth of the artist’s career. It will unite exceptional works from the collection of the National Gallery (including Saint Margaret of Antioch, A Cup of Water and a Rose and Juan de Zurbarán’s Still Life with Lemons in a Wicker Basket) with paintings from the Musée du Louvre (‘Saint Bonaventure on His Bier’ and ‘Saint Apollonia’) and the Art Institute of Chicago (‘The Crucifixion’, ‘Saint Romanus of Antioch’ and ‘Saint Barulas’ and Juan de Zurbarán’s ‘Flowers and Fruit in a Chinese Bowl’), the two partner museums to which the exhibition will travel between October 2026 and June 2027. Other major loans from France (‘Saint Francis of Assisi’, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon), Spain (‘Agnus Dei’, Museo Nacional del Prado; ‘Immaculate Conception’, Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya) and the USA (‘Christ and the Virgin in the House at Nazareth’, Cleveland Museum of Art) will complete this comprehensive exploration of Zurbarán’s career, which seeks to evoke the mystery, vision and power of his art.

From 12 March to 31 May 2026, the National Gallery presents a new exhibition devoted to George Stubbs (1724–1806). Source: National Gallery · Image: George Stubbs, ‘Scrub, a bay horse belonging to the Marquess of Rockingham’, about 1762. Private Collection The only life-size horse portrait by Stubbs still in a private collection, and only once before seen on public display, ‘Scrub, a bay horse belonging to the Marquess of Rockingham’ (about 1762) will be joined in the exhibition by other paintings and works on paper by Stubbs. Visitors will also be able to draw comparisons with the artist’s masterpiece Whistlejacket (about 1762), in the National Gallery’s collection, which will be on display nearby in Room 34. The two equine portraits were painted in the same year for the Marquess of Rockingham (1730–82), who owned both of these former racehorses. He would subsequently decide not to purchase the painting of Scrub. These two paintings are two of the first large as life portraits of horses depicted without a human presence in British art and show how in the second half of the 18th-century Stubbs would change equine painting for future generations through his keen observation and anatomical studies. The exhibition will focus on the creation of Scrub, and will contextualise the commission through two significant projects undertaken by the artist where the horse is the subject.

From August 7 to October 19, 2025, the National Gallery in London presents the exhibition “Millet: Life on the Land” Source: National Gallery · Image: Jean-François Millet, L’Angélus, 1857-59, Musée d’Orsay, Paris The show coincides with the 150th anniversary of Millet’s death – by which time his works were well known in the UK and beginning to be eagerly collected by an enthusiastic group of British collectors, resulting in a significant body of his work in UK public collections. Millet: Life on the Land presents around 13 paintings and drawings from British public collections. It will include the National Gallery’s The Winnower (about 1847‒8), and the exceptional loan of ‘L’Angelus‘ (1857‒9) from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris. The exhibition ranges from Millet’s last years in Paris through to his images of workers on the land during the 1850s following his move to the village of Barbizon in the Fontainebleau Forest in 1849, when he became one of the most significant painters associated with the 19th-century Barbizon school. Two drawings of shepherdesses from the Cooper Gallery (Barnsley) and the Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge) will be shown together for the first time. In ‘L’Angelus’, a man and a woman are reciting the Angelus, a prayer which commemorates the annunciation made to Mary by the angel Gabriel. It is traditionally cited at morning, noon and evening, when it marks the end of the working day. Never collected by its original commissioner, it followed an extraordinary journey through several collections and sales. The two quiet figures silhouetted against land and sky, the profound sense of meditation underscored by a beauty of light have turned it into a world-famous icon in the 20th century. Sarah Herring, Associate Curator of Post 1800 Paintings, says ‘Millet endowed rural labourers with dignity and nobility, depicting them in drawings and paintings with empathy and compassion.’ Source link Reach Out Our Services: Blog Post Writing We do well-researched, timely, and engaging blog posts that resonate with your clientele, positioning you as a leader in your field of expertise.

From April 10 to July 6, 2025, the National Gallery in London presents the exhibition “The Carracci Cartoons: Myths in the Making”. Source: National Gallery · Image: Agostino Carracci, ‘A Woman borne off by a Sea God’, about 1599 © The National Gallery, London This is a rare chance to see these works which, at nearly four metres wide and two metres tall and in the delicate medium of charcoal and white chalk, are not often displayed. The works came into the National Gallery collection in 1837 as part of a gift by Lord Francis Egerton. Prior to this they had been owned by the artist Sir Thomas Lawrence. These immense drawings were made in preparation for the painted ceiling in the gallery of one of Rome’s greatest Renaissance palaces, the Palazzo Farnese (now the site of the French Embassy in Rome). They were created as part of a commission by Odoardo Farnese (1573–1626), the younger son of the duke of Parma who had been made cardinal at the age of 18 and was seeking to decorate the family palace he had inherited in 1592. To do so, he turned to the Carracci brothers, outstanding artists from Bologna who came to visit the cardinal in 1594. Once in Rome, Annibale and Agostino Carracci took inspiration from antique sculptures and celebrated works of painters such as Michelangelo and Raphael, creating an idealised image of the classical world that celebrated the loves of the gods. The ‘Galleria Farnese’ as it came to be called was enormously influential on future generations of artists. These two enormous drawings are the work principally of Agostino, the older of the two, but Annibale may also have played a part in their execution. They show two scenes inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses. As cartoons they were created as part of the preparation for the frescoed ceiling in the Farnese Gallery and would have been used to transfer the design to the wet plaster. Their survival is unusual and as such speaks to the significance given to the drawings shortly after their creation. This presentation will offer a unique insight into both the techniques used to create monumental frescoes, and the Carracci brothers’ own creative process of design and refinement. Source link Reach Out Our Services: Blog Post Writing We do well-researched, timely, and engaging blog posts that resonate with your clientele, positioning you as a leader in your field of expertise.

From 8 March to 22 June 2025, the National Gallery in London presents the exhibition “Siena: The Rise of Painting 1300‒1350” Source: National Gallery · Image: Duccio, ‘The Annunciation’, 1307/8‒11 © The National Gallery, London The exhibition of approximately a hundred works will explore the evolving status of painting among the arts of Europe and show the central role that Sienese artists played in this story, at home, in other Italian centres, and in the cities and courts of Europe. The exhibition will bring together several surviving panels from the monumental double-sided altarpiece known as the ‘Maestà’, painted by Sienese artist Duccio di Buoninsegna (active 1278, died 1319) for the city’s cathedral. This is the first double-sided altarpiece in Western painting, and marks a fundamental shift in narrative art. This remarkably complex work was dismantled in the 18th century. The National Gallery’s own three panels from the ‘Maestà’, will be reunited with other paintings from this ensemble detailing episodes from Christ’s life. These include ‘Christ and the Woman of Samaria’ from the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid and ‘The Calling of the Apostles Peter and Andrew’ from the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. Another reunion will be the ‘Orsini Polyptych’ by Sienese artist Simone Martini (1284‒1344). This is a folding work of art made for private devotion, probably for Cardinal Napoleone Orsini, who belonged to one of the most influential princely families of medieval and Renaissance Italy. Today it is divided between the Louvre, Paris, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp and the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. All six panels – ‘Christ bearing the Cross’, ‘Crucifixion’, ‘Descent from the Cross’ and ‘Entombment’ (depicted on the front of the folding panting); and ‘The Archangel Gabriel’ and ‘The Virgin of the Annunciation’ (seen on the reverse), will be brought together for the National Gallery’s exhibition. Other reunions include two triptychs by Duccio – The Virgin and Child with Saint Dominic and Saint Aurea, and Patriarchs and Prophets, (about 1312–15) from the National Gallery, London; and ‘The Crucifixion’; ‘The Redeemer with Angels’; ‘ Saint Nicholas’; ‘Saint Clement’, (1311–18) from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. They seem to have been conceived as a pair for an individual, possibly Cardinal Niccolò da Prato, and they have matching decorations on their exterior wings.

From 5 December 2024 to 9 March 2025, the National Gallery celebrates the first public display in a decade, following conservation, of a masterpiece of Italian Mannerism, Parmigianino’s “Madonna and Child with Saints”, also known as ‘The Vision of Saint Jerome’. It is the only major altarpiece by Parmigianino in UK collections. Source: National Gallery · Image: Parmigianino’s “Madonna and Child with Saints” (detail) ‘The Madonna and Child with Saints’ was undertaken by Parmigianino when he was just 23 years old during his brief period in Rome, where he worked from 1524-‒27. It was intended to adorn a chapel in the church of San Salvatore in Lauro belonging to the Caccialupi, a family of noted church officials. Depicting a Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Jerome at her feet, it was an important public commission for the young artist, but it was to be his first and the only one he finished in Rome. According to Giorgio Vasari, Parmigianino was at work on this very altarpiece in 1527 during the disastrous Sack of Rome. When the imperial troops of Charles V broke into his studio, they were so amazed by what they saw that they allowed him to continue, demanding he make drawings for them in exchange for leaving him unharmed. Parmigianino eventually fled Rome, never to see his greatest achievement to date installed. The painting was hidden away for safekeeping, and only recovered long after the artist’s death when it was transferred by the patron’s heirs to their family church in Città di Castello. Parmigianino was one of the most exemplary and prolific draughtsmen of the 16th century. The numerous surviving preparatory drawings for the altarpiece demonstrate his restless creative dedication to the project. This focused exhibition reunites for the first time a selection of these with the painting. From atmospheric, velvety chalk studies to spritely, swirling pen and ink sketches, it offers an unique opportunity to rediscover the painting from early concept ideas to meticulously finished final designs, illuminating the artist’s dynamic visual thinking through the elegant vivacity of his line and mastery across a variety of media.
